About the memorial: Hall. The Hall dates from 1780 but in 1890 part of the grounds were lost to road and railway. By 1918 it was empty and The Vicar of St Mary's Church (opposite) purchased it to be Heworth War Memorial Hall costing £5,500 in all, for demobilised soldiers and sailors to be a 'Brotherhood of St. George'. He died in 1928 and the Hall was sold in 1930 to become the Conservative Club, later the Constitutional Club. The Club closed in 2012 and it was bought by Aspire Technology Solutions Ltd. Even then the "brotherhood" sounds a rather noble and idealistic notion, and it is perhaps not surprising that the scheme did not outlive the Vicar. The War Memorial function may have largely ceased to exist, but the building is still there and in good condition. The English Heritage listing was compiled in 1985 and photographed in 2008 [accessed 16 May 2021] so does not give the post 2012 owner of the Hall
