About the memorial: Five light window- three lights were stained glass, the two inner lights of clear glass. Originally in the now demolished St Aidan's Church (closed 1995), the three stained glass lights were transferred to St Stephen's Church where they are in light boxes, the other two clear glass lights were not transferred. They are by Leonard Evetts and were vandalised in the closed church and were restored. They were dedicated as a tribute to the 2000 seamen from South Tyneside who died on convoy duty. The originals in these windows were shattered by a landmine during the bombing raids, these were a replacement

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

A.D. 1951 Our heavenly father, who stillest the storms of/the world, keep in Thy care those of this parish who laid/down their lives in the war 1939-1945. This window/replaces one destroyed by enemy action February 1941
