Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Within a garden/park/churchyard/enclosure/Marketplace
Description: Addition to Gravestone
Materials:
  • Stone Stone (any)
Lettering: Leaded
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: Addition to family gravestone 6O143, which is now recumbent. This was missed on two previous rounds of the Cemetery, so I can't comment on how long it has been recumbent (although my research notes say that it was previously found in connection to Wellington Pit research, and is referenced on the Whitehaven Roll of Honour) He is on the stone of James O'Connor [killed in the Wellington Pit Disaster of 1910- the town's worst ever pit disaster], his wife Margaret and their young children- Margaret Jane and Sarah. I don't know why this is so. Please also note the year of death is not a transcription error, the stone does say 1916, rather than 1917 which is the correct one.
