About the memorial: Granite Obelisk on tapering pediment standing on two steps and a concrete platform. On the top step the names of places are each set in a sunken cartouche on each side, the letters carved to stand proud. The dedication, in raised capital letters, is on a bronze plaque on the front face of the pediment. As well as Chester-le-Street the men were from Tribley, Pelton Fell and Edmondsley
