The creation of reserve armies of such moderately well off men then took on the name “Yeomanry”. The City of London Yeomanry was formed in 1908 as a successor to a voluntary unit which had served in the Boer War. It obtained the nickname “rough riders” after a group of volunteer horsemen who fought in the Spanish-American war of 1898. The regiment was funded by the City of London and its Livery Companies and in WWI had four squadrons linked to the London Mounted Brigade. During its life the regiment became involved with the Cavalry, Machine Gun Corps, Royal Horse Artillery, Royal Artillery and Infantry. It was based in London during the Blitz but later saw action in North Africa and Italy. The Tablet is described as being “nowy headed”, derived from the French word for “knotted”, but for war memorials used to describe a convex projection in the middle of a line. The badge includes the arms of the City of London. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Route:
