About the memorial: A memorial garden for cremated remains, named in honour of Leigh VC recipient Alfred Wilkinson. The elements of the memorial are two fold: Three life-size wickerwork figures, two representing a mother and child waving a welcome to a marching soldier, returned from the war; a large wooden poppy shape on a stand, upon which have been applied a photograph of Wilkinson and various children's drawings illustrating the war, and his heroic acts, and his home life in the town. On a leaf attached to the poppy is the name of the School involved - St Thomas CE Primary School. There are no other dedications or explanations. Wilkinson received his VC on the Somme in 1916 and was killed in a mining accident in 1940 and buried in this cemetery.
