About the memorial: School. At the time the school was built it was on Stockton Road, near Foggy Furze Tram depot. The School replaced an earlier inadequate school at Longhill. Loyalty Road was laid in 1936 with money from the over 600 children of the School. Although the foundation stones are dated 23 March they were actually laid on 25 March. One of the teachers of the previous School, Mr Theophilus Jones (1905-1913) left to become Headteacher of Thringstone School (q.v.). He was the first British soldier to die on home soil in the Hartlepool Bombardment of 16 December 1914 The names of pupils of the old School lost in the War are on WMO/286596.
