About the memorial: Institute. It was a former army hut, and had heated water and electricity. It contained a concert hall capable of holding 500, reading room, billiard room with full sized billiard table, games room, library etc. It was 130 feet long x 24 feet wide. It was bought by Messrs Bell Bros. Ltd (owners of Bowburn Colliery) and furnished by the colliery workmen and villagers. 67 men had enlisted from the village in 1914, 121 in 1915, 106 in 1916 and 115 in 1918. Parcels were sent to each man each Christmas. On Peace Day in 1919 £2 10 shillings was presented to each of 199 returned men. The now relocated names plaque is WMO/286844.
