About the memorial: Metal Plaque in a narrow wooden frame. The names are in two columns divided by a vertical line. It was originally at the Grange Road, Darlington offices. United did not exist as a company at the time of WW1, so there is no WW1 memoriaL. The plaque states their sphere of service in the Military and their home depot, across the United network. These depots are Alnwick, Ashington, Bishop Auckland, Berwick, Carlisle, Central Works, Darlington, Durham, Gallowgate [Newcastle], Hexham, Jesmond, Loftus, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Redcar, Richmond, Ripon, Rothbury, Scarborough, West Hartlepool, Whitley Bay and Wooler. Arriva are the successor company to United. Some of these depots, like Carlisle, were small. (this list has been added here to aid researchers through word search feature).

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.
