About the memorial: This Roll of Honour takes the form of a framed, mounted and glazed list of names of people, who were from within the Oakworth Urban District Council boundary at the time leading up to and including the Great War period 1914 to 1919. There are four columns of names in black lettering of those who served and one central column in red lettering of those who died as a result of their war service. The top is decorated with five shields decorated as flags of the five allied nations of Italy, Belgium, France, Russia and the United Kingdom. Below the shields is a scroll depicting the 1914 to 1919 years of the Great War and one hundred years later, the Centenary period of 2014 to 2019. Two arrangements of flowers adorn each top corner with the blue cornflower, the French symbol of remembrance and our own remembrance symbol of the red Poppy. Both these flowers grew amongst the trenches of the Western Front during the war. Down each side are a series of symbols connected with Oakworth and the war, with the left side symbols representing home and the right side representing overseas. Many of these take the form of badges, buttons and medals which would have been known to the people at the time. A final decoration of forget-me-not flowers on each side reminds us not to forget the war service of these people. The printed sheet has been created in a modern fashion with some elements taken from older memorials but created in a modern way using digital design and printing. A separate identical but unframed copy will be deposited with the archives at Keighley Library along with a digital version of the same. Selecting the names: The original criteria for inclusion on our existing Oakworth war memorial was for those who had been born here, or had lived or worked within the boundary, so we have applied the same criteria when considering people for inclusion on this new Roll of Honour. Sources researched include existing war memorials and smaller rolls of honour; the names on our war memorial; archive sources such as birth, marriage and death indexes; the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census records plus electoral and burgess rolls to discover who was resident here at the time. We have also scoured local newspapers for further information on these people, mainly through the 'Local War Casualties' column. Each person's records have been painstakingly examined to ensure they did serve. Despite this diligent approach we feel that some will have been missed due to the loss of some archive records over the years, notably a great many Army service records which were destroyed during the blitz in World War Two. Many young men of serving age seem not to have served which although odd, may be explained in some cases by appeals to the Local Military Tribunal held in Oakworth which for example did allow some farmer's sons to remain here as the production of food was of great importance to the country and the war effort. Some young men who were underage definitely served and some older men served over the age requirement but they were usually Army reservists or had become time expired after many years service, so were given the 'nod through' on enlistment because of their valuable Army experience. In recent years the Great War Centenary has seen the release of many otherwise difficult to access archive records and these have included some local women who served with the Red Cross, which has enabled us to mark their war service and add their names to the Roll of Honour. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Funding for the production of this memorial was through the former 'Oakworth Forward' group, with many years support from Keighley Town Council and Oakworth Village Society. All of the research was carried out by Andy Wade of the Men of Worth Project CIC - www.menofworth.org.uk. Hosting of the unveiling event was by Oakworth Community Trust who as custodians of the Oakworth Community Hall, will care for the Roll of Honour. Supported by Keighley Town Council. This roll of honour was unveiled on 10th November 2019 at Oakworth Community Hall by Oakworth Gala Queen Hannah Morris and Andy Wade of the Men of Worth Project.
