Status: On subsequent site(s)
Type: Non freestanding
Location: Internal
Setting: Attached to a building/structure
Description: Battlefield (wooden) cross
  • Metal Metal (any)
  • Timber Timber (any)
Lettering: Inscribed on a plaque
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: Battlefield Cross, on the western rebate of the Easternmost window in the north aisle of the nave, adjacent to the Lady Chapel/Blessed Sacrament Chapel with 3 original GRU tags. The bottom tag, with date of death is missing. The tag clearly gives the surname as Rounce, but both CWGC and Church records [page 44 of the Church guidebook] say Trounce. He is not commemorated on the village Memorial (114158) or the adjacent Church Memorial (289174). However this Cross is very confusing as the only 'Trounce' in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry [DCLI] is William Thomas Trounce, died 31 August 1918. He was from St Agnes and is commemorated on the village memorials. No 'Rounce' who died was in the DCLI or from the village. If the date tag was not missing the mystery of who this commemorated could be resolved. It is only possible to record what exists and the conundrums it presents.
