About the memorial: White Marble Tablet with gilt lettering, on a grey marble backboard. Joint WW1/2 memorial. The Brandon Street United Free Church became Church of Scotland at the 1929 reunification. That Church closed in 1967 and the plaque was moved to the Avon Street Church which then changed it's name to St Andrew's Church after the two congregations had united (having been linked since 1963). Both Churches have had other names earlier in their history. Although called Brandon Street Church here for clarity, according to the National Records for Scotland the Brandon Street Church had dropped the word 'Street' from it's name around 1900 to 1905 when the United Presbyterian Church merged with the Free Church across Scotland to become the United Free Church. It further was apparently known as Hamilton Brandon Church (without the 'Street' suffix) the entire time it was again Church of Scotland from 1929 to 1967 (having previously been Church of Scotland before the Disruption of 1843, then a Relief Church until the United Presbyterian Church was formed in 1847). However whether or not the word 'Street' was in the title of the Church at the time of WW1 is disputed by other sources.
