About the memorial: Constructed between 1949-1955, Derby War Memorial Village comprises of 20 acres of land donated by the Town Council with accommodation ranging from bungalows to 2-storey homes for disabled former members of HM forces, the Emergency services and others. The foundation stone was laid on 27 June 1949 by HRH The Princess Elizabeth accompanied by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. The Estate includes part of Chellaston Road, Darwin Avenue, Edinburgh Crescent. Merrill Way, Mountbatten Close, Spencer Avenue and Walton Avenue, as well as Sinfin Avenue. Several of the homes have plaques noting the donations. On 22 June, 1949 Medals and newspapers were placed into a time capsule by Alderman C F Bowmer, Mayor of Derby. It was then taken to the works of Cox Bros and Co (Derby) Ltd where it was sealed by Mr John Geeson, chief lead burner. It was then taken to F Garratt and Son in Derwent Street where it was placed in a cavity at the back of the foundation stone by Ald C R Bates, vice chairman of the War Memorial Council, and cemented in. On 22 May, 1950 The key to the first completed house was handed to the tenant by Ald C F Bowmer JP, Mayor of Derby at a ceremony on the site. c1994 The village was extended to the east of Walton Avenue, with four new bungalows. On Sinfin Avenue there is also a black bench with a frame of square tubular metal with the seat formed from horizontal rails. The backrest is formed from sheet metal cut to portray a silhouette of the London skyline with two Spitfires above, a spray of red poppies to the left and inscriptions above and below. Also on Sinfin Avenue there is a polished, black granite obelisk on a square two-stepped base commemorating the 70th anniversary of the village. Inscriptions are incised on the 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock faces in gilded, upright, mainly sentence case, roman lettering. Also on Sinfin Avenue there is a bench recording two peoples' years of service to the village which is a A black bench with a frame of square tubular metal with the seat formed from horizontal rails. The backrest is formed from sheet metal cut to portray a silhouette group of WW1 infantrymen standing by a battlefield grave marker. The scene is surrounded by coils of barbed wire with a spray of red poppies to each side. The main inscription is cut through the top and bottom rails and a small tablet at the top bears a supplementary inscription in black sentence case lettering.; also a bench to George Arthur Hibbert, Vice President of the Village which is a black bench with a frame of square tubular metal with the seat formed from horizontal rails. The backrest is formed from sheet metal cut to portray a silhouette group of WW1 infantrymen standing by a battlefield grave marker. The scene is surrounded by coils of barbed wire with a spray of red poppies to each side. The main inscription is cut through the top and bottom rails and a small tablet at the top bears a supplementary inscription in black sentence case lettering. There are several other benches as well. Other bungalows were given by Aiton and Co, British Railways Derby Workshop, one given by public subscription (all on Sinfin Avenue), Ford and Weston Ltd (Building Contractors)- on Spencer Avenue, The Sherwood Foresters Regimental Association, Derby Technical College, Derby Carnival Committee, Allenton British Legion and one by public subscription (all on Walton Avenue)

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.
