About the memorial: A free standing monument with a lifesize recumbent effigy of a figure on a black sarcophagus with a dedication panel. The sarcophagus is on a low pedestal that has another dedication. Although giving the appearance of a tomb, it is of course not. General Gordon's body was never found after his death in Khartoum in 1885. The inscription shows the contemporary view of his heroism. Midshipman Gordon died on the HMS Captain which was launched in 1870 and capsized in the Mediterranean a few month later with the loss of 480 lives due to catastrophic design faults.
