Setting: Within a garden/park/churchyard/enclosure/Marketplace
Description: Addition to Gravestone
Materials:
  • Stone Limestone
Lettering: Incised
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: An addition to the wording on a family gravestone. The low limestone headstone is in the style of a scroll unfurled over a decorative wall. The headstone originally surmounted an oblong base with bevelled top but has now become detached and leans against it. The inscription is inlaid on the face of the scroll and on the base of the wall, but much of it is missing and most of the remainder is damaged. The headstone is accompanied by oblong kerbs. The gravestone gives the name as W A Grainger, but CWGC name him as William Henry Grainger (as does his birth certificate) - both forms are used in the title of this report. The Gravestone gives his age as 33- CWGC state 32 which is again corroborated by his birth certificate.

Some war memorials are not eligible for funding from War Memorials Trust.
Further information is provided on our helpsheet ‘Definition of a war memorial for funding purposes’.

As a conservation charity which gives grants War Memorials Trust can support repair and conservation works that follow best conservation practice. Grants are awarded from funds raised by the charity so money available is limited and is therefore focused on eligible war memorials.

War Memorials Trust’s Definition of a war memorial for funding purposes helpsheet explains which war memorials are eligible and ineligible for funding.

As a charity, War Memorials Trust relies on voluntary donations and every contribution, no matter how large or small, makes a really big difference to our work. Your donation will help protect and conserve war memorials for future generations so please support War Memorials Trust’s work.
