Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Within a garden/park/churchyard/enclosure/Marketplace
Description: Addition to Gravestone
Materials:
  • Stone Granite
Lettering: Incised
Conflicts:
  • Second World War (1939-1945)
About the memorial: An addition to the lettering on a family gravestone comprising a Latin cross on a three-stepped base. The grey granite cross has an incised Christogram at the head and the inscription is incised in upright capital block lettering on three sides of the base. The gravestone surmounts a granite slab plinth and is accompanied by oblong granite kerbs with the maker’s name incised at the foot. It is close to the northern corner of the churchyard (reference C16). Able Seaman Frederic Pearce, mentioned in the inscription, is buried here so this is not a war memorial to him, it is his war grave, recognised as such by the CWGC. The gravestone clearly gives the year of death as 1918 but the CWGC give 1916. This would benefit from investigation, but it may have simply been as stonemason's error.
