Description: Stone of remembrance

  • Stone Stone (any)
  • Stone Granite
Lettering: Incised
Conflicts:
  • Second World War (1939-1945)
About the memorial: A stone tablet on the top sloping surface of a granite plinth. There is a similar memorial at Milltown Cemetery, Belfast, hence the very particular title (this is not yet recorded on WMO due to insufficient information, but it's presence is noted by Wikipedia). Of interest is that one German died in the Blitz- he was Ernest William Riecken (born 14 April 1876 at New Munster)- a waiter at the Carlton Cafe, Donegall Place, Belfast. He and his wife Louisa died at their home- 6 Annadale Street on the night of 15-16 April 1941. He is recorded as being buried somewhere at Carnmoney, but the location of his grave has not been identified (so therefore in one of the parish graveyards). His wife's body was never recovered or was unidentifiable, but was recorded as deceased at the subsequent mass inquest on 6 June 1941.
