About the memorial: Grey stone tablet with inscription in blue and red capital lettering. Armine Dew was not a serviceman, but a First Secretary in the Foreign Office. The plane in which he was flying was one of several going to the Yalta Conference of February 1945 where Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin discussed post-war plans. This party had transferred to a York from a Liberator at the last minute. It was a flying accident (an attempted ditching in the sea) due to out of date weather forecasts and navigation errors by a crew of experienced airmen who had never flown together before. But is a legitimate war memorial as he died in the course of wartime duties. See aviation safety link for full details.
