About the memorial: Metal Plaque. At the outbreak of WW2 16,000 of the population of 20,000 had been evacuated to Morocco for their own safety. After the British bombing of Oran they were evacuated again from there to Madeira, Jamaica and England. Most of the English contingent went to London (where their billets included luxury hotels). In 1944 after the start of V1 bombing in London 7,120 were evacuated yet again to Northern Ireland in 3 contingents arriving on 19 and 24 July, and 3 August. They were housed in 17 camps in the province clustered around Derry/Londonderry, Ballymena (of which this was one) and to the south of Belfast. Many of them were Jews (qv WMO/291950). After the war repatriation was slow due to conditions in Gibraltar with around 3,000 still in the province at the start of 1946, and around 1,000 in January 1947. As the plaque states the last to leave did not do so until July 1948. The pin location is approximate. Please seek local advice if you wish to visit the site,
