About the memorial: Memorial to Lieutenant Julian Henry Layard, 37th North Hampshire Regiment. The oldest son of Lt General Frederic Peter Layard and Ida Gabrielle Betts. He was born on 15 May 1850 in Berhampore, Tamil Nadu, India. He was the Assistant Military Attache to the British Embassy at Constantinople where his uncle, Sir Austen Henry Layard, was the British Ambassador. He was with the Turkish forces during the Second Battle of Shipka Pass, Bulgaria, in Aug 1877 during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), when 38,000 Ottomans failed to defeat a Russian and Bulgarian force of 7500 holding the pass. He died of typhoid fever on 24 Sep 1877 near Shipka and was buried in a temporary military grave in Kazanlak, Bulgaria. In Nov 1877, his remains were disinterred and taken to Haydarpa Cemetery in Scutari (Üsküdar). His uncle chose a burial site for his nephew near the Crimean officers graves.
