About the memorial: Relocated from Woolwich Garrison, London to Larkhill, Wiltshire and erected on the Memorial Wall outside St Alban the Martyr Garrison Church. Captain Francis Broadfoot Russell was the eldest son of Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Russell, of the Madras Infantry and Anna Russell. He was born in Madras, India on 4 Sep 1842. In 1861 he attended the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. Commissioned into the Royal Artillery. Promoted to Lieutenant 20 Sep 1864. He served in Malta and in Canada, and returning to England in 1869, passed through a course of gunnery instruction at Shoeburyness. Served in India and Aden. In Oct 1877 he was sent to Pietermaritzburg, Natal and took command of a Rocket Battery. He was killed in action commanding his battery at Isandlwana on 22 Jan 1879.
