About the memorial: An assemblage of colliery items including half a winding wheel, two coal tubs and several plaques and interpretation boards. The original memorial was designed and constructed by Clowne Historical Society. It was dedicated to 39 miners who had lost their lives at Clowne Southgate Colliery between 1877 and 1929, but did not allude to military casualties. Later additions included a plaque mounted on the face of a brick pedestal adjoining the right base of the winding wheel. The oblong metal plaque is inscribed with columns of names relating to the different collieries or war casualties. The inscriptions are in upright block lettering, different sections being in either capital or sentence case. The whole site has not been recorded and only the plaque relating to WW1 and WW2 is described. The memorial is on the northwestern side of Station Road, near the junction with the access road to the Station Road Industrial Estate, and at the southern boundary of the former Southgate Colliery. The plaque is by the right base of the winding wheel. It is at National Grid Reference SK 49420 75819. There are two columns of names either side [so 4 columns in all] of a central dedication. The names do not differentiate which conflict they fell in but do state which pit they worked at.
