About the memorial: The plaque was originally dedicated 14th May 1958 at the base of the newly-reopened cliff lift, opposite the approach to Shanklin Pier. In October 1987, the pier was destroyed by a storm, and the plaque was either lost in the destruction or removed. On 19th September 2005 the renovated plaque was rededicated by Countess Mountbatten of Burma. It is now attached to a bolder at what was once the pier approach, near the Sandown and Shanklin Rowing Club boathouse and across the road from the lift. There is an explanatory plaque on a second boulder facing it. See Comment regarding the validity of this entry.
