About the memorial: Painted panels on the pre-existing Reredos (see comments about the history of this record). There is a metal dedication plaque below the north side painting. One depicts Nowell as St George, the other as St Michael. The reredos was given in 1899 and consists of five panels (fully described in the Church guidebook, irrelevant detail to this record). The panels on either side were added in 1915/1916 by his father-Revd William Oxland He was a war poet. His father was Vicar of Alston at the time of his death (and until 1917) but by the time the CWGC register was compiled in the early to mid 1920's he had moved to Portsmouth [and had actually died there in 1918] (this demonstrates the importance of understanding how the CWGC register and archival sources was compiled) .
