About the memorial: A framed nowy-headed painting on a wooden board. The full colour painting is believed to have been executed in oil-based industrial paint of the type used to paint railway carriages in the early twentieth century, and is applied onto a thin board. At the centre is a yellow oblong panel bearing the names in brown upright capital block lettering. This overlays an oval of reds and golds at the foot of which is a small detailed depiction of military materiel including a rifle, sword, cap, ammunition belt and an artillery shell. In turn the oval overlays three unfurled scrolls. Flanking the oval are two upright oblong scenes, that on the left depicts a battleship at sea firing a full broadside salvo, that on the right depicts a battlefield cavalry charge. At the head of the panel is an array of unfurled flags of eight allied nations superimposed by a green banner with the department name in gold upright capital roman lettering, a royal crown and an unfurled scroll bearing the Buck in the Park emblem of Derby encircled by a laurel wreath. At the foot of the panel is a similar unfurled scroll bearing the Wyvern emblem of the Midland Railway Company and a horizontal maroon panel bearing the dedication in gold upright capital roman lettering. The artist's name is at the bottom right of the painting. The frame is of wood moulding and bears a small Bakelite plaque at the foot bearing subscription information. Carriage painting was carried out in G Building and it is presumed that the memorial was originally erected there.
