About the memorial: Erected by the entrance path to St. Mary's Church May 1919 in memory of "sailors and soldiers" who lost their lives in the First World War. It is constructed in oak and shows Jesus hanging on the cross with a incised board at the base. On the centre post the dates "1914 - 1918" and "1939 - 1945" are carved, the latter added after the Second World War. The Calvary, measuring approximately 3.400mm H x 1.600mm at its widest has been constructed completely in oak using a mix of seasoned, and green stock. The Calvary consists of a central upright with two morticed and tenoned horizontal beams, secured with large oak pins which the carved figure has been mounted. A pitched roof tiled with wide oak boards projects out the west face of the monument to offer protection over the carving. Two inscribed panels sit within oak frames, with laminated top rails either side of the central upright, and are fixed using large mortice and tenon joints, held with oak pins. The structure is bolted to a substantial concrete base through a painted mild steel bracket that has been coach screwed to the central upright of the cross. The carved panels that extend either side have been let into plastic sleeves within the base, and then filled with concrete to match. An original WW1 date inscription has been carved into the face of the central upright which begins just above the top of the metal bracket. A later WW2 date has been added below to match the original.
