About the memorial: Memorial to Colonel Bonar Millet Deane, late 19th Regiment of Foot. Son of the Reverend George Deane, Rector of Bighton, Hampshire and Mary Deane. He was baptised on 28 Nov 1834 in Bighton, Hampshire. Husband of Lucy Deane, daughter of the Reverend John Evelyn Boscawen, Earl of Falmouth and Catherine Elizabeth Annesley. He was appointed Deputy Adjutant and Quarter Master General at the Cape of Good Hope on 2 Aug 1880. He was Commanding the Natal Field Force under General Colley at the Battle of Laing's Nek on 28 Jan 1881 where he was killed in action aged 46 years. He was buried at Mount Prospect Cemetery.

In memory of Colonel Bonar Millet Deane, D.A.G Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Formerly in Command of the 1st Battn 19th Princess of Wales Own Regiment, who was killed while gallantly leading the attack at Laing's Nek on the 28th Jnuary 1881 aged 46. This cross is erected by his brother officers and friends in remembrance of a good and brave officer.
