About the memorial: More than 360 Old Carthusians served in the Boer Wars, of whom 36 died on active service. The South African Cloister was built as a memorial to these casualties. Designed by W.D. Caroe, the Cloister runs along the south side of the original 19th century Charterhouse Chapel (now known as the Old Music School). The foundation stone was laid by Robert Baden-Powell OC in September 1901. In addition to a commemorative frieze and a panel listing the casualties’ names, some Boer War veterans have individual plaques, either in the South African Cloister or in the small Founders’ Chapel above the Cloister.
