About the memorial: This the gift to the cathedral by a Miss Joan Wilson, presented and worked by her in memory of her step-brother Lieutenant Charles Oswald Hayward aged 21, 7th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and Royal Flying Corps, who was killed on 17th January 1916 near Dadizelle, Belgium. The memorial was dedicated by the Dean of the cathedral on 30th June, 1928, Thomas Charles Fry. The banner depicts the figure of St. Oswald, Anglo-Saxon king of Northumbria AD642, a typical Christian warrior saint. In his right hand he supports a wooden cross before which he commanded his whole army to kneel in prayer before a battle. His left hand holds a horn. The banner was completely re-furbished in 2002 by the Cathedral Needlework Guild Symbols Top left hand corner-Two ravens, one carrying a chrism of oil and a letter in which St. Peter is supposed to have written “Christ has blessed this oil”. The other is his Coronation Ring. Lower left corner- Flanders poppies: Top right hand-Fictional arms of Oswald.
