Preface from the Book of Remembrance: For many years a copy of the original Book of Remembrance was on display in the Remembrance Garden adjacent to Penlee House Gallery and Museum and more recently, due to structural problems, within the gallery itself. The book contained sparse information on those who gave their lives from the Second Boer War to the present day and it was therefore decided that a fuller record should be compiled. This book, which has taken several years of research, is the result of those efforts but it is still not yet complete and possibly never will be as it is now 100 years since the start of the Great War. However, it is hoped that, by putting the details collated so far into the public domain, further information will be forthcoming and that in the end we will have a comprehensive record and a fitting tribute to those from the Town who made the supreme sacrifice. The enlargement of Penzance Borough in 1934 has also been taken into account with the inclusion of Gulval, Heamoor, Newlyn, Mousehole and Paul. The total number of names is 655 broken down as follows: Boer War 8 Great War 380 World War II 260 Korean War 3 Other Conflicts 4 This Roll of Honour was formally presented to Penzance by the Town Council in August 2014 during the celebrations to mark the 400th year since the granting of the charter to the town and the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of The Great War.
