About the memorial: Dedicated 27th October 1920, the same day as the school's memorial obelisk (WMO/63127). From 'Thames Valley Times', 3rd November 1920: 'In the larger upper assembly hall for boys a portrait, representative of the old boys who gave their lives, was unveiled by Mr. Trengrouse. It was that of Sergeant James Nightingale, a scholar and teacher of the school, who was killed on the Somme in 1915. At the bottom of the portrait is the following sentence from a letter to his parents written by the young soldier before he went into action:- "If I go under, you will know that I have only done my duty honourably, and that it was for the country's sake."'
