About the memorial: A framed and glazed roll of honour. The printed roll has a broad scroll across the head bearing the introductory inscription in red, black and gold upright capital Roman lettering supplemented by guilloche strips of gold scrollwork. At the centre is a green wreath of bound laurels, with a ribbon at the foot, containing photographs of 21 soldiers labelled with details of their deaths. The wreath is surrounded by a detailed painting against a blue sky: at the top left is a winged figure of Victory in blue robes and holding out a palm leaf while at the top right is a biplane and a white dove of peace. At the foot of the wreath is a sword in its scabbard supporting the continuation of the scene: at the left is a group of damaged and ruined buildings while at the right are military materials including a rifle, ammunition, a steel helmet and a warship in the background. Four columns of 141 names are arranged in two columns each side of the wreath by order of enlistment year. The list duplicates the names of the fallen whose photographs are in the wreath. The names appear to be hand written in black calligraphy with annotations, where relevant, of decorations and casualty details in red and with the names of the fallen underlined in gold. At the bottom left corner of the roll are explanations of the abbreviations used to identify casualties etc. At the bottom right corner are significant dated relating to the progression towards peace. Along the foot is a reference to the Accountant's Department. The moulded oak frame has a flat-topped nowy head decorated with foliage at the sides and a swag in relief at the centre. This may have once supported a carved Wyvern, which was the badge of the Midland Railway and described in an earlier report, but which is now missing. Formerly at Wyvern House, Railway Terrace.
