About the memorial: Highly decorated brass plaque set within a black slate backplate. Double-lined black border enclosing twisting ropes with quatrefoils in each corner enclosing a naval anchor with entwined rope. Main inscription enclosed within a black-lined rectangle; red cross top centre and shield coat of arms (lion rampant over red background) overlaying sheathed sword with entwined strap bottom centre. At the foot are two scrolls with battle honours of Inkerman and Sevastapol.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.

Sacred to the Memory of / The Hon. Randolph Capell 3rd son of Arthur Algernon / 6th Earl of Essex, Born 24th March 1832 / He entered the Royal Navy in 1846 obtained his / Lieutenancy in 1853 and served under Admiral Dundas / on board the Britannia in the Black Sea and formed part / of the Naval Brigade in the trenches during the entire siege / of Sevastopol. In April 1857 he went out to Rio Janeiro / as Flag Lieutenant to Admiral Wallis HMS Cumberland / and died there of yellow fever on the 24th December 1857 [??] 25 universally lamented and beloved.
