About the memorial: In 1943 a hospital was built in the grounds of Kingston Lacy Estate, now a National Trust property. Over 100 buildings were constructed. It was operated by the US Army and catered for D Day casualties and those from the following operations. Over 20,000 men were treated here. It was demolished in 1958 at the request of the then owner, Ralph Bankes, in accordance with the original agreement. Only the ambulance shed and the remnants of what is said to be an isolation unit remain, though close analysis of the map will show clear signs of cropmarks. At the time of my visit a model of the hospital was on display in the Servants' Quarters of the main house, but I was told it would probably return to storage after the D Day anniversary commemorations have passed. There are no signs or signposts to direct the visitor to the site or to explain it, nor does it appear on the site map. .I commented on this to several volunteers, in the hope that it might lead to something. See Comment of 8/6/2024 for directions to the site.
