About the memorial: A Market Cross with a three metal plaques on different faces of the base, the one on the east face commemorating the Battle of Stow in the First English Civil War. Towards the top, under the terminal Cross, are four stone carvings. The one on the south face shows the head and shoulders of two figures - probably Charles I and Oliver Cromwell. A tree - probably an oak lies between them. Underneath is the date 1646, the date of the Battle of Stow and the end of the First English Civil War.

THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR/BATTLE OF STOW 21ST MARCH 1646/NEAR THIS CROSS SIR JACOB ASTLEY/SURRENDERED TO PARLIAMENTARY FORCES/FOLLOWING DEFEAT AT THE BATTLE OF STOW./SOME 200 ROYALISTS WERE SLAUGHTERED IN THE/SQUARE AND 1500 IMPRISONED IN THE CHURCH/OVERNIGHT. THIS WAS THE FINAL BATTLE OF THE/ FIRST CIVIL WAR LEADING TO THE END OF THE /ROYALIST OCCUPATION OF OXFORD./STOW AND DISTRICT CIVIC SOCIETY
