About the memorial: In the centre light the figure of Christ is represented as “Captain of our Salvation” made perfect through suffering, which is suggested by the Crucifixion in the predella subject below. On the left side is the figure of St. George as patron saint of England in the predella subject he is represented as slaying the dragon. On the right is St Oswald and in the subject below he is depicted pointing up towards the wooden cross which he had erected before the battle of Heavenfield. Shields containing the arms of St George and St Oswald appear in the upper part of the side lights and in the tracery the Pelican feeding its young with its own blood is emblematical of those who have willingly shed their blood in the Great War to save others.
