About the memorial: Memorial to commemorate the death of Commander Reginald Hayter RN, only son of Walter and Harriette Hayter of West Wratting Place who was also married in the church in 1924. Reginald Hayter was a Naval Officer who has specialised in submarines and was on board the submarine HMS Thetis which was conducting diving trials in Liverpool Bay on 1st June 1939 before acceptance by the Royal Navy. He was at the time working in the Naval Equipment Directorate and attending the trials in that capacity, not as a member of the crew. Following a number of technical and human errors, the submarine sank and was not discovered for 18 hours, by which time the crew were so debilitated due to the lack of oxygen and carbon dioxide poisoning that only 4 crew were able to escape. As a result 99 men died and most are buried in a mass grave at Holyhead Anglesey. This was and still is the worst submarine distater the Royal Navy has ever had. Reginald Hayter left a wife Dorothy and two children Eve Ann (9) and George (8 months) who were then living in Woking, Surrey.
