About the memorial: An oak shrine, with a central carved crucifix beneath a canopy, and a brass plaque fixed to its lower edge. Flanking the crucifix are two inset panels, bearing the handwritten inscription and names of 14 parishioners who died (including James Atkinson Longridge). The brass plaque bears a separate inscription re Lieut-Colonel James Atkinson Longridge (whose family gifted the shrine to the church). The memorial was originally in St Paul's Church, Exeter. Prior to the church's demolition in 1937, the memorial was removed to an unknown location. Its current whereabouts are unknown.

The panel to the left of the crucifix reads: 'THOSE/ whose names are/ written here gave/ up their lives for/ the freedom of/ others, in the/ Great European/ War, 1914-1918./ ETERNAL REST/ grant unto them/ O LORD, and let/ light perpetual/ shine upon them./ AMEN'. The panel to the right of the crucifix lists 14 parishioners' names (including James Atkinson Longridge). The brass plaque (attached to the memorial's lower edge) reads: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF/ JAMES ATKINSON LONGRIDGE/ KILLED IN ACTION 18TH AUGUST 1916 AT CONTALMAISON'.
