About the memorial: This is not a war memorial. “Headstones or grave-markers marking the place of burial of an individual or group of people killed as a result of war or conflict” are not deemed war memorials under the definition of what is recorded which is hosted by IWM’s War Memorials Register see Links. The record has been left on this website as having been added we recognise that some people may perceive it as such but technically, because it relates to a burial ground it is not a war memorial. Generally war memorials are located in place of bodies which have not been repatriated. Scottish Veterans Residences was established in 1910, and Whitefoord House in the Canongate area of Edinburgh's Old Town opened its doors to homeless Veterans on 1 January, 1911. The memorial was erected within Eastern Cemetery, which is bordered by Easter Road, Drum Terrace, Albion Road and St Clair Street. The sandstone memorial measures 6.25m (w) x 1.98m (h) x 0.35m (d) and includes 11 separate bronze panels with the names of Servicemen who passed away while residents of Scottish Veterans Residences in Edinburgh, between 1917 and 1943. Each name is accompanied by their regiment or service. Thereafter, the names of residents were inscribed in a Memorial Book. To view the memorial, enter the cemetery via the Drum Terrace entrance, then bear right for around 50 yards.

Some war memorials are not eligible for funding from War Memorials Trust.
Further information is provided on our helpsheet ‘Definition of a war memorial for funding purposes’.

As a conservation charity which gives grants War Memorials Trust can support repair and conservation works that follow best conservation practice. Grants are awarded from funds raised by the charity so money available is limited and is therefore focused on eligible war memorials.

War Memorials Trust’s Definition of a war memorial for funding purposes helpsheet explains which war memorials are eligible and ineligible for funding.

As a charity, War Memorials Trust relies on voluntary donations and every contribution, no matter how large or small, makes a really big difference to our work. Your donation will help protect and conserve war memorials for future generations so please support War Memorials Trust’s work.
