About the memorial: This oak memorial has carvings of thistles and roses. It displays a crucifux in the central panel. It also has carved gilded inscriptions and the names of the men you served in both the First and Second World Wars. Originally displayed in St John's Church, Oakwood Pontrhydyfen, it was unveiled on June 12th 1924. This memorial commemorates the fallen from the villages of Pontrhydyfen, Tonmawr and Bryn as St John's was the mother church for all three villages. Following the Second World War, only the names of men from Pontrhydyfen are recorded on the memorial. This panel may be a later addition to the original memorial. When the church was closed, the memorial left the village but has been returned for display in Pontrhydyfen Community Centre. The gilding has deteriorated in places.
