About the memorial: The cross seems to have been erected as a memorial to Sapper Basil Gale, who was killed in action in June 1918 and is buried at Varennes in France. The inscription on the front of the cross is above the inscriptions about him. His brother William died in November 1918 while on an officer training course on the Isle if Wight. The inscription to him has been added on a side panel. What is not clear is whether Serjeant Gale's body lies here in what is plot N 3/2433of the Lower Cemetery. So it may be that this is in fact the grave of Sergeant Gale with his brother added as an Addition to Gravestone memorial. If it is a grave, then presumably he did not qualify for a CWGC headstone because of the place and nature of his death. His CWGC entry specifically refers to this plot within the cemetery. The original source for this record, and CWGC show William as a sergeant (or serjeant). The memorial says 'cadet' to denote his status as a trainee officer although he held the rank of serjeant from his active service in Franc.
