About the memorial: This is Longton's official War Memorial. The original aspiration was for an Institute to be built as the village's Memorial to those who fell in the Great War, but insufficient funds were solicited to fulfil that ambition. It was then decided that funds should be raised to buy land to provide a recreation ground. Over the years the grounds have been developed so that there are now games pitches laid out, all-weather tennis courts, and two bowling greens. Over the same time various buildings have been erected for the use of people using the facilities and other local groups. The present club house dates from 1992 and replaced a pavilion destroyed by fire in 1988. The presence of the Recreation Ground is announced by the name of the lane on which it stands, Victory Lane, where a large painted sign gives details of the facilities available, and of some of the organisations which use them. Near this is a large granite boulder which carries a small brass plaque with a white enamelled incised Dedication. Inside the clubhouse entrance is a copy of the villages WW1 Roll of Honour
