About the memorial: A large parcel of land on the approach to St Mary's Church, Penwortham, gifted to the Church in memory of the donor's sons; one died returning from South Africa in 1905, the other at Passchendaele in 1917. The land extended from Church Avenue down a steep bank to the side of the Liverpool Road, and was part of a larger area which included the site of Penwortham War Memorial (WMO/172763) on the side of Liverpool Road, which was donated by Arthur Fish. At the point where the two parcels of land meet a sandstone Latin cross, inserted into an older base, was erected at the side of the avenue. A small sandstone tablet carrying the incised inscription was placed on the ground beside it, within a kerbed area. The old brother is buried in the nearby churchyard, and both are commemorated on brass plaques in the chancel of the church- WMO/303992 and 303996 Major Rawstorne is also listed on several local WW1 War Memorials.
