About the memorial: Pair of Arts and Crafts style Cottage Homes, with red brick walls and tiled roofs. Built by Mr Dart (Crediton) in 1903 to the design of Messrs Wood and Arnshe architects London and were paid for by Alfred Lafone MP, the Devonshire Regiment and public subscription. These Cottage Homes were erected in memory of Captain William Boutcher Lafone, who died in the charge of the Devons at Wagon Hill, Ladysmith on 6 January 1900, as well as other soldiers from the Devonshire Regiment who also died in the second Anglo Boer War. For many years, these cottages provided homes for ex-servicemen until being sold. Now privately owned, with a former ornamental arch over the entrance to the cottages removed, these dwellings remain discernible as a pair of early 20th century Cottage Homes.
