About the memorial: Pair of circa 1921 semi-detached two storey dwellings now in private ownership. Originally built as homes for men of the Devonshire Regiment, with preference for soldiers who had served with the 2nd Battalion. Constructed in memory of Major Alfred Joseph Elton Sunderland (served in the 2nd Anglo Boer War and who died in action near Ypres in July 1917) and Captain Charles James Spencer (also served in the 2nd Anglo Boer War and who died in action in Flanders in 1December 1914). Money for the homes was raised by Capt H G Hawker in memory of his friend Major Sunderland and by Captain Spencer's wife (who resided at Crapstone House, Yelverton) and relatives. £200 also granted from the Mayoress of Exeter's War Funds. The ornamental archway that was formerly displayed at the entrance to these memorial cottages is now at Wyvern Barracks, Exeter.
