Description: Memorial Homes/Alms Houses
Conflicts:
  • Boer War, Second (1899-1902)
About the memorial: Semi-detached stone built cottages on about a quarter of an acre site. Erected 1910-1911 in memory of officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the KOYLI who died in the 1899-1902 war in South Africa. The plans were prepared by Mr Alan G James and the building works were undertaken by Messrs. Akeroyd of Birstall. Described in the local press at the time as "superior artisan's dwellings, well-built, and furnished in every respect, and architecturally an addition to the district in which they are placed". Occupied by injured soldiers and their families, rent free. Both properties were vacant by 1979 and in need of repair. Sold to Messrs Fox's Biscuits (owners of adjoining land). Demolished circa 1983.
