About the memorial: A remarkable story fully covered in the attached media links. Lt McCabe emigrated from Perthshire to Saskatchewan and joined the Canadian Army in WW1 (40% of that army were of Scots heritage.) While on duty on Hill 60 (Ypres) in May 1916 (see Comment of 7/8/2025 below) he noticed a small clump of spruce seedlings which had somehow survived in No Man's Land. He pulled nine and sent them to he father Martin McCabe, a gardener at Ardvreck in Perthshire. Shortly after, Lt McCabe was killed at Vimy Ridge. His father auctioned one of the trees for £5 for the Red Cross. It was bought by the then owner of Abercairny Estates and planted, with a small dedicatory plaque. It is now an immense tree. A bench has been erected around the tree which has been visited by descendants of Lt McCabe. Please see Comment of 28/7/2025 below regarding ownership, location and access.
