MEMORIAL TO THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR / Commemorating the lives of north-east volunteers and celebrating the idealism and spirit of solidarity that took them to Spain. / In 1936 Spain elected a government committed to progressive change. The / army under General Franco rebelled against this and what followed were the / three years of the Spanish Civil War. Franco was helped by the Italian dictator / Mussolini and by Hitler in Germany, but the British and French governments / blocked the supply of arms to the Spanish Republic. This ensured Franco's / success and a military dictatorship in Spain until 1977. / People in many countries saw that a Franco victory would strengthen fascism / in Europe and threaten another world war. They joined the International / Brigade of the Spanish Republican army to defend Spanish democracy / against the threat of fascism. / In Britain some 2,500 people volunteered to fight Franco in Spain and over / 100 came from the North East and Cumbria. / The following were killed and now lie in unmarked graves in Spain: (names)
