About the memorial: Quire East window. Large 14-light medieval stained glass window, set within Perpendicular stonework, the outer 4-lights of which on each side are set at slight angle (i.e. in triptych-style). The window depicts ecclesiastic and biblical figures, and heraldic designs. Of the 14 coats of arms it depicts, the first and last 4 in the row all relate to noblemen who served in the Crecy Campaign, and are believed to have survived intact, and arranged as per the original design. [Most of the window's original 14th Century glass has survived. However, some is of a later date, and the arrangement of some panels is believed to differ from the original design. Although its 'main purpose' is considered a moot point by some, the window is acknowledged as dating from c1350. It is widely believed to have been commissioned by Thomas, 1st Lord Bradeston (who was listed on the Calais Roll in the King's Division at Crecy), as a commemoration of those who served in that Battle, and also in memory of his 'close friend and neighbour', Sir Maurice de Berkeley -who subsequently fell in action at Calais on 20/2/1347].
