Type: Non freestanding
Location: Internal
Setting: Inside a building - public/private
Description: Altar or Altar Part
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: Large, wooden, carved altar screen-divided into three sections, one which projects forward in a decorated cuboid, the other two stay close to the wall. All three are decorated with elaborate carving - the central block, which is subdivided horizontally into two sections, has a pediment decorated with natural motifs, interrupted by vertical beams some of which morph into a design which resembles the traceried windows of a medieval church, three of these beams extend beyond the pediment to become spirelets. A large, plain, gold cross sits in the centre of this upper section. The transition between the sections is facilitated by a dozen floral corbels, below which the lower section is divided into five sub-sections. The central panel is a large, circular cross, decorated in ostinato with floral designs. The four remaining sections, two each side of the central panel are also miniature traceried windows. The two panels fast to the wall are identical, each has a pediment decorated with four rosette-shaped corbels, below which two more false traceried windows are divided by a thin panel, blank except for another small traceried window design. In the two principal panels, beneath the false windows are examples of linenfold carvings.
